JACKSON BROWNE RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA & NZ IN APRIL 2023 0

Frontier Touring are pleased to announce Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriter’s Hall of Fame inductee Jackson Browne will return with his full band to Australia and New Zealand in April 2023, performing five special headline shows in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
‘As he performed a heartfelt “These Days,” you could not help but marvel at how a very young man had first written this world-weary meditation. But this veteran of Southern California’s freeways also has no hesitation to rock out … for the show’s penultimate encore, Browne beautifully reclaimed “Take It Easy” as an exuberant call to “lighten up while you still can.” – Billboard
His first live dates in both countries since 2018, Browne’s forthcoming tour follows the release his 2021 GRAMMY®-nominated 15th studio album Downhill From Everywhere, the latest work in a multi-platinum career. Hailed as one the “Greatest Songwriters of All Time” by Rolling Stone and responsible for some of the most literate and moving songs in modern times, Browne has sold over 18 million records in the US alone since his 1972 debut on David Geffen’s Asylum Records.
Tickets for all headline shows go on sale Thursday 25 August (12pm local time) via frontiertouring.com/jacksonbrowne, with the Frontier Pre-sale beginning Monday 22 August – see Frontier website for show details and ticket information. While in Australia, Browne will also perform at Perth’s a day on the green (not a Frontier Touring show).
With hits such as ‘Running On Empty’, ‘These Days’, ‘Doctor My Eyes’, ‘The Load Out’… co-writer of Eagles’ classic ‘Take It Easy’, recent single ‘Minutes To Downtown’ and many more – Browne’s remarkable, eloquent songwriting is matched by his social justice work. Browne got his start behind the scenes, penning tunes that would be recorded by the likes of Nico, The Byrds, and Tom Rush before launching his own solo career. Known for his advocacy on behalf of the environment, human rights, and arts education, Browne is the co-founder of Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) and Nukefree.org, and a member of Ocean advocacy group Ocean Elders. In 2002, he was the fourth recipient of the John Steinbeck Award, while he has received Duke University’s LEAF award for Lifetime Environmental Achievement in the Fine Arts, and both the Chapin-World Hunger Year and NARM Harry Chapin Humanitarian Awards.
Joining the tour as special guest (Melb/Syd shows) is Liz Stringer, one of Australia’s most admired and versatile songwriters and instrumentalists. Recently nominated for two AIR Awards for her album First Time Really Feeling and winning the ‘Best Independent Blues and Roots Album’ category, Stringer has recently been on the road in the USA performing with Midnight Oil.
Celebrating his first new album in seven years alongside his legendary arsenal, Jackson Browne live on stage is not to be missed.

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT ANNOUNCE NEW SINGLE & NATIONAL TOUR 0
Pic by Kane Hibberd
Fusing smouldering intensity with existential exploration, the latest track Visiting Hours from Aussie rock legends ccontinues the quartet’s passionate journey towards the release of their long-awaited fourth studio album: the aptly titled IV, with the official release date today unveiled to be September 2. An emphatic anthem that harks back to earlier Butters territory while staunchly showcasing the group’s ongoing evolution, Visiting Hours is another triumphant peek into the brand new LP that will arrive 14 years after its predecessor, 2008’s The Final Conversation of Kings.
With a stacked national tour also on the cards from late September into October, The Butterfly Effect’s first full tour since 2019, fans can catch old and new favourite tunes across the country, with Ben Hall, Clint Boge, Glenn Esmond and Kurt Goedhart, aka The Butterfly Effect, bringing local heavies Thornhill and Caligula’s Horse along for the ride, kicking off in Cairns at Tanks Art Centre on September 30 before hitting Townsville, Mackay, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Sydney, Hobart, Melbourne and Adelaide before bringing proceedings to a close in Fremantle on October 16. And for fans in Melbourne who missed out on tickets to the sold out October 14 show at Northcote Theatre, The Butterfly Effect have also confirmed a second Melbourne show at Northcote Theatre set for October 13. For tickets and information, head to www.thebutterflyeffectband.com.au.
Visiting Hours unfurls with haunting guitar work courtesy of axe-man Kurt before steadily building a world of melodic beauty and oscillating beats around frontman Clint’s raw yet intimate vocals. A dark, brooding and, ultimately, optimistic outing that draws inspiration from the likes of Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Tori Amos and Kate Bush, Visiting Hours showcases an assured and steady technicality from the Brisbane quartet, with the occasional heavier textures signposting the band’s rockstar status alongside sparser moments juxtaposing previous riff-heavy singles like Nil By Mouth and So Tired. An instant and unmistakable The Butterfly Effect opus, Visiting Hours holds a special place for the band while lyrically traversing life and the human condition, as Clint explains, “It feels amazing as always to be releasing new music and I really think this song is one of our best. To me it is about our eternal search for meaning and worth. It’s about the human condition and an existential crisis that faces us all, but at the same time as asking questions it has an undertone of hope and I hope that resonates with everyone that listens to it.” Echoing Clint’s sentiments, bass player Glenn shares, “This is probably my favourite of the new songs. I’ve loved this tune ever since we first demoed it back in 2009. I’m so excited that everyone’s going to finally get a chance to hear it. All of us in the band have acutely felt the passing of time, and I think Clint’s words reflect this. Our time here, as people and as artists, is very fleeting. Life is delicately impermanent and we’re never guaranteed a second chance.”
Following a chance meeting at a gig back in 2017 between Kurt and Clint, absence had entirely made the heart grow fonder following Clint’s departure from the band in 2012 and the ultimate disbanding of The Butterfly Effect announced back in 2016. And from fortuitous meetings to reuniting the original lineup back in 2018, The Butterfly Effect soon set their sights on album #4, bringing in the likes of Forrester Savell, Nick DiDia, Matt Bartlem, Clint Vincent, Luke Palmer and Stuart Stuart to bring various pieces of the new release to life; and the end result for IV is nothing short of electrifying. Journeying through love and hate, gains and losses, highs and lows, life and death and beyond, IV burrows into themes of dreams and the realities of the dichotomies of life, as well as the variables we all face on a daily basis. Opening with hazy, brooding intensity via title track IV, the broader IV album brushes with soaring melodics (Dark Light), crushing textures (The Other Side), searing riffage (Nil By Mouth) and a horde of inspiration from the likes of Faith No More, Gojira, Jeff Buckley and Deftones. Showcasing The Butterfly Effect at their most elegantly ferocious and focused to date, there’s significant balance throughout IV between show-stopping rock and riffing roar alongside significantly hard-hitting thematics, as Glenn elaborates, “It feels like there’s lots of contemplation of death and rebirth. Disconnection and then reconnection. The temporary nature of time, the passing of dreams, getting older, dealing with change, finding new meaning in life. All of these are completely understandable when you consider the history of the band over the last 10 years and where we all find ourselves as we get older”.
A band significantly well-versed in writing, recording and life on the road, The Butterfly Effect remain one of the all-time Australian greats of their generation, from their critically-acclaimed previous releases to their voracious live shows, both at home and abroad. And while the upcoming new album may be arriving at a very different stage of life, both for the band personally and their legion of lifelong fans, IV is a textbook example of expecting the unexpected, offering a chance for a collection of songs to finally leap into the world alongside freshly written material, as Clint shares, “I am so happy we got here to this point in time. Some of these songs were written straight after Final Conversation of Kings and would have been on the next album had we stayed together. So for these songs to see the light of day and for us to be able to present them to all who wish to listen is a huge privilege and a moment I won’t forget.”
Fans can look forward to a healthy mix of new Butters tunes alongside plenty of fan favourites when The Butterfly Effect take to stages to celebrate IV later this year, and the band themselves couldn’t be more excited to make their way around Australia armed with their brand new album. Of the upcoming shows, Clint says, “I’m excited about all the shows from the smaller stages in the north where it’s up close and super personal to the bigger stages and bigger rooms down south, it’s going to be great getting back out there”. And while fans are already ecstatic about the impending tour, with the original Melbourne date already sold out and a second one jumping in for good measure, the band can’t wait to hit the road, as Glenn concludes, “I’m most excited about playing fantastic new songs. The familiar faces of fans that have been supporting us for so long. The camaraderie with the crew and the other guys in the band. Life can be pretty busy, and the opportunities to socialise and hang out seem to get fewer as we get older. Beers, shit talk, fried food from the servo, I am going to enjoy every moment”.
Tickets for The Butterfly Effect’s upcoming national tour are on sale now from www.thebutterflyeffectband.com.au.
Visiting Hours is out now. IV is set for release on September 2.

49 AUSTRALIAN SONGS HONOURED IN INTERNATIONAL SONGWRITING COMPETITION (ISC) 0
Multi-category winner Sahara Beck
The International Songwriting Competition (ISC) is pleased to announce its 2021 winners. Launched in 2002, ISC is considered the most prestigious songwriting competition in the world, receiving more than 21,000 entries this year from over 150 countries. Renowned for its panel of high-caliber judges, ISC has been called “the songwriting competition to take note of” by The New York Times.
This year continues the amazing winning streak by Australian songwriters, once again taking home the most wins of any country second only to the USA. Australians have garnered four First Places, two Second Places, five Third Places, and 37 Honourable Mentions in the competition. Additionally, an Aussie has been awarded the winner in ISC’s special Stocking Stuffer promotion.
“The number of wins by Australians is impressive but not surprising,” said Candace Avery, ISC Founder and Director. “The entries we receive from Australians have a sound that is fresh and inspired. Perhaps this is partially due to Triple J and their mandate to play (and break) local artists. This offers such a unique and valuable outlet for Aussie artists to be heard nationally in their country and allows for a lot of musical freedom and creativity. We always look forward to hearing what Aussie songwriters produce, and we are often blown away by what we hear.”
Throughout the years, many Australian artists have been honored in ISC, including four Grand Prize winners: Tones And I; Kate Miller-Heidke; Kasey Chambers; and Vance Joy. Additional winners have included Amy Shark; Augie March; Big Scary; Birds of Tokyo; Dean Lewis; Eskimo Joe; Flight Facilities; Gang of Youths; Gotye; Guy Sebastian; Jebediah; Matt Corby; Missy Higgins; Ocean Alley; Ruel; Sarah Blasko; Shane Nicholson; The Living End; Troy Cassar-Daley; Vera Blue; Washington; and many, many more. In addition to Australian winners, other previous winners have included: Illenium; Bastille; Fantastic Negrito; R.LUM.R; Lindsey Stirling; Kimbra; Dustin Lynch; Faouzia; The Band Perry; Kehlani; Gregory Porter; Passenger; Gin Wigmore; For King and Country; Adrienne Lenker (Big Thief); and many more.
Overall, the ISC winners hail from all over the world (56% of this year’s winners come from outside the USA) and range from talented amateurs to seasoned songwriting veterans. The 23 categories include all genres of contemporary music, from Rock to Pop to Country to R&B/Hip-Hop and more.
The overall Grand Prize is ISC ‘s highest honor and this year is awarded to Alt Pop songwriter and performing artist Stephanie Middleton (aka Notelle) from Richmond, VA, USA for her song “Sufjan Stevens.” This award, selected by ISC’s panel of celebrity judges and music industry executives, is given to one songwriter in the competition who embodies the highest degree of excellence in the craft of songwriting.

GRAMMY AWARDS 2022: ALL THE WINNERS 0

The Grammy Awards returned to an in-person ceremony on April 3, 2022 in Las Vegas and the maskless stars came out to play. Silk Sonic featuring Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak opened the show with a performance of “777,” the Vegas-themed song from the R&B duo’s debut album “An Evening with Sonic.” Their song “Leave the Door Open” was nominated for four Grammy awards tonight, including Record and Song of the Year (and won all four in a clean sweep!). During the duo’s performance, Bruno Mars could be seen on a dazzling Fender Custom Shop Late ‘60s Stratocaster in Surf Green.
Grammys host Trevor Noah did a great job, only vaguely referring to the disaster that was this years Oscars.
In a nice touch, production crews were celebrated by having some them introduce the artists they work with. A clearly nervous production manager, Nicole Massey was the first to hit the stage, introducing her boss Billie Eilish as she performed wearing a Taylor Hawkins t-shirt.

It was also great to see the legendary Joni Mitchell on stage alongside Bonnie Raitt introducing the fabulous Brandi Carlile.
In one of the night’s most poignant moments, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the world, asking everyone to use their music to send a message of peace to the world.

Great news for Australia was the first Grammy win for Rufus Du Sol, who picked up their award for Best Electronic/Dance Recording for their album Alive.

Every year The Grammys honour those in the music industry that we have lost, with this year’s list being extra raw due to the very recent death of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. The Foo Fighters also won 3 Grammys on the night.

In addition to being nominated for 8 Grammy awards and winning for Best Traditional R&B Performance, H.E.R. took the stage and performed an incredible, star-studded mashup of her hit “Damage” and Lenny Kravitz’s song “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” Rockstar drummer Travis Barker (on his DW Drums kit and Zildjian cymbals) and Kravitz (with Gibson Flying V) joined H.E.R. for the second song to make for an epic Grammy-sized performance. During her performance, she used her gorgeous H.E.R. Signature Stratocaster® that she personally collaborated with Fender to create in 2020.

The biggest winner of the night was Jon Batiste, best known as band leader from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Batiste won 5 Grammys including Album of the Year for We Are.
Interestingly, The 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards drove a 3.3 percent increase in album sales compared to the previous week, according to a Billboard report. The 2010 GRAMMY Nominees album jumped to No. 5 with sales of 71,000 units, a 55 percent increase. Top GRAMMY winner Beyoncé’s I Am…Sasha Fierce rose to No. 14 with sales of 32,000 copies, a 101 percent increase. Other GRAMMY performers experiencing sales increases include Pink (up 234 percent), Dave Matthews Band (up 114 percent), the Zac Brown Band (up 82 percent), the Black Eyed Peas (up 76 percent), Taylor Swift (up 58 percent), and Lady Gaga (up 17 percent). Lady Antebellum, who also performed on the telecast, remained at No. 1 for the second consecutive week. (2/10)
